Akunis called Mamdani "an antisemite hiding behind a fake smile" over the mayor's criticism of Israel's war in Gaza, adding: "This is a disgusting lie, Mr. Mayor."
Why It’s Conflation
Mamdani has said Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Israel's consul general in New York called him "an antisemite hiding behind a fake smile" for it. Accusing a government's army of genocide is a charge against a state, not hatred of Jews.
What Actually Happened
In a CBS interview, Akunis quoted Mamdani's position that Israel is "responsible for a genocide in Gaza."
